History of Ross Chapel A.M.E. Church
In a neighborhoodthat was called Pinetown, there was a little church on the side of the road, which was called Todds Chapel. The land had been purchased by a man and his wife, by the name of Charles Todd. The members of that little church outgrew that little church, and decided to build. The pastor at that time was Rev. Nichols. In the community were some people by the name of William Ross and James H. Ross, for which the church is named today, Ross Chapel. The church was built by some of the members that were carpenters. One of which was Clarence W. Ross, with the help of others.
The church was dedicated October 11, 1914. Many members come and gone, but there are only a few around that remember the beginning of this church. The front where the restrooms are was added several years later while Rev. James Carey was here. The picture of Jesus was done by Rev. Carey. This pulpit furniture was purchased by the Philadephia and Ross Chapel Cemetery Club. The piano was purchased by money raised by the choir. The organ was purchased by the group called Gospelettes, which was sponsored by Bro. and Sis. Fred Brummell. The pew benches were upholstered by Mr. Charles Murray in the year 1969. The front walk was done by Bro. William Albert Cook, June 13, 1939. Charles Edgar Cephas was the organist up until his death in 1930. Since then we have had Sis. Francis Stanford, Bro. Freddie Brummell, and Bro. Albert Hubbard as organists and pianists.
In the years back, we had camp meetings, always the last Sunday in June and the first Sunday in July. Sometime there would be service on the outside with tents and a stand with a large light wood stump burning for light at nighttime for a large prayer band.
By the help of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and Rev. Fitchett, we are trying to keep the church going and hope to keep it going for many years to come.
